Captain

Duties of Job
  • Have a working knowledge of all officer’s duties and job requirements
  • Expertly navigate vessel in all situations; including fishing, traveling while in or out of international waters, and docking
  • Able to navigate vessel while setting, and hauling gear
  • Have command of the vessel and crew
  • Establish adequate supervision and watches for the safe operation of the vessel ensuring proper drills and instructions
  • Familiar with 46 CFR part 28, stability instructions, USCG 2692 reporting requirements (i.e. IFQ landing, NMFS logbooks, daily production reports, etc.)
  • Work with management to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Will ensure the NMFS observer is not impeded in doing his / her job
  • Ensure good discipline and order
  • Comply with management instructions and requirements
  • Assist in developing yearly fishing plan
  • Assist in hiring and place crewmembers in appropriate positions
  • Knowledge in operating all electronics, communications and computer systems.
Training and Licenses
  • Coast Guard mandated licenses and/or training
  • Commercial fishing license

Mate

Duties of Job
  • Have a working knowledge of all officer’s duties and job requirements
  • Familiar with government and / or state USCG 2692 reporting requirements (i.e. Groundfish logbooks and forms, IFQ landing requirements, etc.)
  • Responsible for the general record keeping for the vessel including but not limited to: vessel station bill, crew roster, garbage, radio, phone, safety medical / injury logs, and vessel licenses and documents
  • Responsible for all off-load documents including but not limited to: discharge tallies, discharge summaries, mate’s receipts and bills of landing
  • Responsible for the proper completion of personnel documents (i.e. contracts, I-9’s, W-4’s, etc.)
  • Knowledge in operating all electronics, communications and computer systems
  • Able to navigate vessel while traveling, setting, and hauling gear
Training and Licenses
  • Coast Guard mandated licenses and / or training
  • Commercial fishing license

Chief Engineer

Duties of Job
  • Responsible for maintaining all machinery on board the fishing vessel
  • Refueling while in port
  • Fix any broken machinery if possible
  • Practice preventive maintenance
  • Maintain detailed logbook for all machinery for service and maintenance
  • Log engine hours and fuel consumptions for all engines for service purposes
  • Report any machinery problems to the Captain
  • Keep engine room clean and in good running order
  • Change oil, fuel filter and air filter on all equipment
  • Be conscious of not discharging any pollutants into state and federal waters
Training and Licenses
  • Minimum 500-ton Uninspected Fishing license
  • Commercial fishing license

Engineer's Assistant

Duties of Job
  • Works exclusively for the Chief Engineer. All work given to the assistant will be directed by the Chief Engineer. Jobs are as follows but not limited to:
  • Daily maintenance of factory; greasing of factory equipment, adjusting belts, daily cleaning and inspecting of all factory equipment including freezer hold conveyor belts, etc.
  • Fabrication and mechanical repair as needed
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting
  • Daily maintenance of Mustad System; checking and changing of sheaves & combi maintenance
  • Makes rounds while Chief Engineer is down as directed by Chief; ensuring all is mechanically sound. Checking for safety hazards & work from Chief’s worklist
  • Any additional work not listed will be directed by the Chief
Training and Licenses
  • Previous boat experience preferred
  • Commercial fishing license

Cook

Duties of Job
  • Responsible for living conditions onboard the fishing vessel (i.e. laundry, housekeeping, etc.)
  • Write order and inventory food for upcoming trips
  • Provide quality “family style” meals
  • Comply with Annex V MARPOL disposal of plastics and garbage at sea
  • Comply with State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation sanitation requirements
  • Comply with budget requirements
  • Work with Marine Food Management for menu planning and galley supplies
  • Keep galley and equipment clean and in good working condition
Training and Licenses
  • Previous boat experience preferred
  • Commercial fishing license
  • Food Handler's permit
  • Recommended: Culinary training

Lead Foreman

Duties of Job
  • Set and haul gear
  • Maintain all deck equipment/fishing gear and line
  • Inventory of all deck equipment
  • Report to Mate what is needed to maintain adequate stock of gear
  • Supervision of approximately eight deckhands who help set and haul gear
  • Responsible for getting as many freezers unloaded as possible between setting and hauling
  • Responsible for all operations on weathered decks, (i.e. stowing lines, securing garbage, etc)
  • Tie up boat
  • Haul mid-buoys
  • Operate crane safely and efficiently and run it during offloads and back-loads
Training and Licenses
  • Commercial fishing license
  • Recommended: Able Body Seaman licenses and CPR and/or First Aid Training

Crew

Deck/Gear/Factory

Duties of Job
  • Handle Lines to tie up vessel
  • Set and Haul gear
  • Maintain Gear
  • Thaw and break bait
  • Operate Combi
  • Run roller operation
  • Assist on deck (dip net)
  • Bleed Fish
  • Run heading machine
  • Gutting of fish and ancillary products
  • Panning of product
  • Load and unload freezer plates
  • Bag and stow product
  • Offload and backload vessel
Training and Licenses
  • Commercial fishing license

Quality Control

Duties of Job
  • Responsible for quality of finished product
  • Work with Factory Foreman
  • Report to Captain and Mate
  • Inspect fish for quality and handling
  • Take core temps to ensure fish is maintained at correct temperatures
  • Remove product from freezer pans so it can be bagged and stored in the hold
  • Help where needed in factory to help control quality throughout processing
  • Keep track of the amount of product in the hold
Training and Licenses
  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certificate – usually obtained through Surefish
  • Commercial fishing license

Steward

Duties of Job
  • Works for cook to maintain clean living, galley and mess areas
  • Assists cook in meal preparations and cleanup
  • Clean bathrooms, vacuum, do laundry for crew, empty garbage and keep supplies stocked
  • Occasionally fill in where needed
  • Must be able to perform all duties with minimal supervision
